Great that some people are able to control who moves into the neighborhood. My neighbors move in and out as they please. I cannot screen them according to their financial capabilities. Guess I must live on the WRONG side of the tracks!!! I own my own property and I have all I can do to take care of my business.report abuse

The reality of it all I don't really care what happens to this facility. it is good to get people looking at this issue. I'm sure all will work out to either help out the community or continue the way it is at the present time nothing, but an eye sore. We need new housing in the area as many of the apartments that in the Waterville area are in need of up grading in many ways that aren't cost of affective for the curent landlord. As for being confused I'm far from being confused. Housing at this time in Waterville is at the present prices mentioned. It is expensive and out of control and rising. Thank god the people in this area have owned there homes for a long time and don't have a mortage, go look for a one bedroom apartment in Waterville you wouldn't put your animal in for $500.00 a month plus. There are plenty in the area. This is why we need new and impoved housing for people that could qualify for Section 8.report abuse

dd is a little confused on the definition of "affordable housing" as he/she has apparently made the assumption that this means housing targeted for seniors. Affordable housing administered by Maine State Housing is not exclusively for seniors but for anyone who meets the low/no income criteria...most of whom derive their income from subsidies. Senior housing is a whole different animal and has age requirements... I ask you what senior needs a 3 bedroom apartment? Are they contemplating starting all over with a new family? Have you forgotten about the housing project already underway in the prior YMCA site? This is a planned 1 & 2 bedroom facility that is suited for seniors & handicapped. Do we need another housing project in the same vicinity?report abuse

A park would be a poor use of that space -- parks don't pay taxes. A privately developed housing complex would be taxable, and presumably assessed at a higher rate than it is now. It is a beautiful old building and it would be a shame to see it simply become a broken down old wreck, beyond repair or restoration. The city could use the gym. We don't need more office/retail space -- there is plenty of that downtown and elsewhere in need of tenants. Decent housing is the best use of that property. When I am too old to keep up a house I might like to live there.report abuse
