Having attended Central School, it saddens me to think of it being closed. While financially, it may be the soundest choice, the sense of community within the school will be lost if the kids are transported to Embden each day. I am concerned that the New Portland kids will be the outsiders. The bus ride all the way to Embden will be extremely long, particularly for those students who live on the Kingfield side of New Portland. Also, the students' ability to participate in extra curricular activities will be further reduced due to parents not being able to afford gas to pick up their kids in Embden. My own kids now attend schools in Mid Coast Maine, which has made me realize what a uniquely positive experience I had in attending a school like Central, although I did not realize it at the time.report abuse
