David: Emancipation doesn't automatically mean she won't be attending school anymore, and if she wanted to make that choice she'd be able to do so regardless of whether she was emancipated or not. As a matter of fact, I do believe the judge will take that into consideration in their choice of granting the emancipation or not, because continuing school shows some degree of responsibility which is needed to become emancipated.
To everyone else.. are we overlooking the fact that since the girl is in DHHS custody Maine taxpayers are already supporting her? The emancipation could give her the opportunity to go out and get a job, etc. to become self-supporting, an opportunity that she may not have otherwise.report abuse

First off, I tend to agree with most that have posted. However, what about the young people who face serious abuse at home, whether physical, sexual or emotional? Being emancipated may not be the best thing for these young people, but staying in the home is? I am very, very aware that not all parents should never have been parents to begin with. That being said, where does a 16 year old turn? Staying in an abusive home, going from foster home to foster home or making an attempt to try on their home. Anyway you look at it, many young teens are in a crisis situationreport abuse

that what we need one more teen out on the streets doing what ever they want.what happend to the old days when you could kick your kids a** for screwing up.nowdays parents are slaves to their kids.(dont hit me the state says you cant)you see more crime and disrespect from teens now then you useto and if this one gets what she wants its just going to pave the way for others.report abuse

if she gets emancipated they should run this follow up story.if she is old enough and responsable to be emancipated then they should be able to print her name.like someone said lets track her progress,i have the feeling though we will be supporting her in some way.report abuse
