Bike lanes in Waterville are used for extra parking spaces...check out the wonderfull bike lane on North St. It is loaded with parked cars on a daily basis when the pool is open and when there is a soccer game on. Bike riding on North St. is a hazard. Dodging kids, dogs and autos. Where are the no parking signs, where is the enforcement?report abuse

I moved from California, where there are bike lanes, sidewalks, clean streets, and physically fit people, who know and follow bike rules. This is not the case in Maine, where none of the above exist, and the climate is not conducive to biking. Bikes on sidewalks or in the snow carrying a 250 lb. person is not a healthy situation. This area is not geared towards bikes. No bike racks, limited bike shops, and business women in Maine are too conservative to get on a bike, as well as their male counterparts. No matter how high the price of gas, neither the European or Western lifestyle will ever catch-on is this part of the country. Only children ride bikes here, and most, only after snow is gone. The majority don't know how to ride a bike, either because they don't have one, or haven't had a chance or place to use it. The only fat-burning biking done in Maine is done in a gym or at home on stationary exercise bikes. Most adults seen riding bikes down the street are those who are too poor to own a car.report abuse
