I agree that we shouldn't despoil our national parks in order to extract oil. However, ANWR isn't a park, it's a more than 19 million acre area where very few folks live and very few visit. Exploration for oil would entail only about 1 1/2 million acres and the actual drilling area would cover less surface area than Dulles Airport. After the oil has been extracted, that area would be restored to its present condition. Obviously, three trillion barrels do matter a lot because the world will be using a lot of crude oil for many, many years.report abuse

Dismissing wind because of its intermittency is a fine way of ducking a challenge. The solution is to find ways of addressing the intermittent nature of wind (i.e. storing wind energy), and investing in technologies that will improve wind, solar and other clean energies.

There is no single energy source that will make all others obsolete. The only ones we should be attempting to marginalize are those that pollute our world with CO2, radioactive waste, etc.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Sprung's idea that we should decimate our National Parks in drilling for more filthy oil. This is not intelligent, it is merely prolonging and deepening the problem. It is a bit like suggesting the best cure for obesity and ill health is to push a solid diet of McDonalds and soft drinks. Old thinking.report abuse

Solar, in Maine, is nothing if not "intermittent."report abuse

Wind isn't THE answer, but it should be part of an energy mix. Whether there is almost no oil or three trillion barrels left is immaterial, if the price rises so high no one can afford to buy it any more (but logically the price should drop then, shouldn't it). Remember the last time prices rose? They dropped, but not nearly to what they were. They'll drop this time too, back to a reasonable $3.49 a gallon!

Too many environmental concerns are getting in the way of any energy development, no matter what the type. Extremists decry all development, but what do they offer as an alternative?report abuse
