In fact, you'll be saying it. ;)report abuse
Is that different from anywhere else? Really?
Nobody here is going to tell me anything about drinking at Colby College. I worked there in the security office, and don't require further information. Unless you've done it, you have no idea. That includes those who have worked as administrators at other colleges or Colby for that matter. If you're not the one going to work every night, wondering if tonight is going to be the night you're going to have to make the phone call to the administrator to tell them you didn't have what it took to keep some stupid kid alive until the paramedics got there. You don't know.
That said. What's the difference? 1700, 2000, students on the hill? 25,000 in the city of Waterville? Five hundred or so on the hill able to drink legally, roughly?
How many people in Pete and Larry's, Champions, and other night clubs and bars in Waterville? How many people hurt in these places and outside each weekend? How many go home, drunk, driving? How many get into fights and beat their partners, men and women?
The idea that the "problem" is unique to Colby College, or any other college is simplistic and stupid. The location is the only thing that is unique. As a country, we have a small minority of people who are irresponsible. Barring the remainder from anything on the basis of a few irresponsible and stupid people will accomplish nothing. That includes guns, ATV's, jet skies, motorcycles, cars, and any other manner of thing. You cannot ban stupid. Write all the laws you want. Those people will be just as stupid and irresponsible as before.
Run a fence around everybody, on the basis that a few are stupid. You're in the same fence, dummy.report abuse
You posted this:
My view that there was no Colby Bubble is severely changed, and it really sucks, because as far as I was concerned Colby students and Waterville residents were making progress. Focus on the issues, think before you post...
My response:
Excuse me? You offer a little adolescent rant like this, urging censorship no less!, and you wonder why Waterville residents don't like Colby students?
The word is PETULANT! That's you!report abuse
It goes to the issue of attitude and entitlement. Go back and re-read the article. Also, money does play a factor because Colby is widely known to avoid conflict with its own students, partly because there's a good track record of what happens when they do press certain students. There was a story about one unruly student being arrested by Waterville PD and winding up in jail. By 3 a.m. that evening a private attorney was a Waterville PD making demands. This attorney had been flown from Florida on a private jet to Maine. Now, that's a large segment of the Colby experience. It may also be at the root of why these problems never seem to be addressed, and your own Dean of Students raised the issue of class differences, saying that students from higher socio economic categories wind up binge drinking more often.
That's how money became a part of this discussion.
By the way, if you kicked all of the "rich" kids of your campus, you wouldn't have a college left. Tha's the point!report abuse
