You better hold on to your wallets, because it's only going to get worse.I moved here from NH to get away from such intrusion. When it started to cost over a thousand dollars for a building permit, and as for any home improvements, well you paid a percentage of what it cost you for the project. Oh and going in front of a planning board, well don't drop your soap. We realy only have our selves to blame, because we allow it, hell some even want it. So we need to wake up a join together other wise it's hopeless.report abuse

The reason, Brian, is that according to those legislators themselves, Mainers, all Mainers, are too stupid to make their own safe decisions about their homes, cars, children, jobs or anything else. The proof of this is the simple fact that Maine keeps electing these idiots and then complains when the idiots pass new restrictive laws quietly in the shadows, or attached to something else. You're right, we don't need this legislature. We need Mainers that think before they vote so we can end the nanny state mentality.report abuse

chromedome of China, ME...

Excellent post, I couldn't agree more. I am just flabergasted at the public wanting more rules and regulation from those idiots in Augusta.

Where is the public outrage? Tommorrow as you drive your car and you are FORCED TO WEAR YOUR SEATBELT, ponder this question...

Why do we need the legislature telling us what to do?

We need to stop this legislative madness!report abuse

Skowhegan Code Enforcement Officer Randall Gray predicts approval of the uniform code is only a matter of time: "It's just a while off, but it's going to happen."

I think a lot of the Augusta politicians that are out for themselves will be out of office if they force another mandate on people, "It's just a while off, but it's going to happen.".

If the politicians think they must pass this intrusion on our rights then it should be done like the insulation standards were done and be applied only to homes speculators build. Who wants to put an addition on ones own home and have the Town or State walking through to make sure you built it THEIR WAY. This bill would also mandate certain materials along with construction techniques, this is just another example of the politicians in Augusta and their business friends greasing their own favorite wheels.

Every time the voters allow another law they also allow enforcement and that means someone else telling you what to do and how to do it. Maine people have always prided themselves on being able to make their own decisions and that should go to how they build their homes also.

Like it was said in a previous article “Maine homes aren’t collapsing”. This looks like another way for the big box stores to force people into spending more money during a big slowdown in their sales right now. The big home supply stores must think if Maine people aren’t spending enough money on materials now lobby for a new law that makes them do so.

Augusta, keep you and your friends out of my house!report abuse
