Comments about: Real ID better than having to pay for federal passport
Well, it appears that I need to have my passport renewed. I had one for my trip in 1995 to see my mother's cousins...

First of all, I don't understand why eveyone keeps talking about a "national ID card, national drivers license." The drivers licenses will still be issued by the states themselves. The only difference will be that some states(many have been doing this before 9/11) will require proof of US citizenship to get a drivers license. Take Colorado for instance(my home state.) When I got my drivers license there I had to show a birth cirtificate, social security card, and get finger printed. I also was given a temporary paper license until the CO dept of motor vehicles checked me in the NDR(national driver registry.) to make sure I did not hold a license in any other state and that I was not suspended in any other state. CO is going to comply with the real ID act but in thier case there is noting that they have to do that they have not been doing for the last ten years. When I moved to Maine last year I went to the motor vehicles with my CO license, my birth certificate, and social security card. I was told this was not proof I was a Maine resident. I later had to return with a copy of my cable and cell phone bill and they issued me a Maine drivers license on the spot without even checking anything. This state could care less about my birth certificate or social security card. The were much more interested in my cable and cell phone bill. It's a wonder why anyone would try and get a fake id. It would be much eaiser to come to Maine, get a cell phone, order cable service, and then get a Real ID. It's a truly embarrasingt that the legistaure and the people of this state are trying to fight the Real ID act(it's apparent that most Maine citizens don't even know what it is.)report abuse

Whatever positive spin you decide to put on this Real ID, do not forget that it will contain a tracking chip imbedded in it that lets the government know where you are, what you doing, and whatever else it wants to know about your private business. I am a law abiding citizen, but frankly, I'm not so hot on anyone storing my private information in this manner, and using it via satellite for a yet unshaped agenda. This chip will decide if you can enter a federal building, get on a plane, open a bank account, and much more. If big brother wants my fingerprints to prove who I am, have at it! I have no issue with the ink print. But if he wants to access the private details of my life, look in my windows and monitor my daily life, then I do have a problem. We are losing our liberties a bite at a time, and everytime one is lopped off, it is always for national security, so citizems buy into it. Heard rumors about imbedding chips in babies so they can be saved from kidnappers? I have, and it is pretty scarry. I just realized my new passport has a chip in it, too!

Hey, Uncle Sam, I just had a great trip to Italy -- saw all the sights and thoroughly misbehaved! Oh! Yeah...I forgot...you already knew that.

Remember, liberty requires constant vigilence. Pick and choose very carefully what is okay...or someone else will do it for you.report abuse

Right to the point, Nelson. The Gov'ner of MT pretty much used the same words . . .report abuse
