As a retired teacher, I can say that, although there were problems with the program, the money has been well-spent. Some kids didn't use the laptops appropriately, but I saw a great deal of improvement in student work quality and quantity, particularly with boys who had difficulty. Many middle school boys don't have good penmanship (remember when THAT used to be taught?), so they don't like to look at their own writing, and it is physically hard for them to put words on paper. The laptops have made a significant difference. Now their ideas can go on paper without all the problems with the physical part of the writing.

Thanks, Governor King, for pushing this program. Thanks, Kay Rand, for the letter. And shame those say or think, "we got along without them." The ancient Sumerians decried the invention of writing itself saying that students wouldn't nave to memorize any more. Laptops in the hands of kids are just the latest in educational tools, not toys.report abuse
