Published in SA Crime Quarterly No 4, June 2003:

While being a cop is a dangerous profession anywhere in the world, the number of police killed annually varies substantially between countries. In Canada, an average of three police members were killed annually between 1961 and 2002. In contrast, an average of 79 police were killed in the line of duty each year between 1979 and 1998 in the United States. The US death toll declined throughout that period, however, and by 1998, the rate was about ten on-duty police murders per 100,000 cops, NOT MUCH MORE THAN THE SEVEN MURDERS PER 100,000 CITEZENS IN THE GENERAL POPULATION.(my emphasis)

We are almost as likely to be killed as a police officer, according to this report....report abuse

Newnickname,
Like I said, you are entitled to your warmongering opinion. Remember you too will be a gray haired old fart and probably wiser after living thru more Iraqs, Vietnams & Koreas.
This article was not about starting a culture war or arguing mindless bigotry.
Anti-war protests may not be hip or groovy to yourself, but they are to the Constitution.report abuse

C-Fairer 'This is a country of liberty and free speech. If you don't like the anti-war movement and want it stopped, you are no friend of freedom’ I am not a fan of the "anti-war" movement and I am a friend of freedom. I refuse to bow down to the whims of the roughly 500 people statewide who went to these rallies and who are trying to force their 1960's mindset on the rest of us. The baby boom generation will be remembered for giving us higher divorce rates, latchkey kids, AIDS, a "lose at all costs" and "hate America first" mentality, higher taxes, welfare, drug addiction, and political correctness, just to name a few highlights. The only people I saw at these "freedom rallies" were grayhairs trying to remember the glory years through the acid washed, hazy memories and the kids they suckered to come along with them. Where are the rest, those between the ages of 28 and 42 years old? Working to pay off the excesses of the baby boomers and working to support the slackers of generation "why". All this while laboring under the burdens placed on us by the welfare loving liberal state. But, because I express this ideology, you will claim I hate freedom, because I hate your viewpoint. Yes, we have lost almost 4000 troops, which is terrible. In that same time frame we have lost 836 Police Officers killed in the U.S. Almost 25% of the total of soldiers killed in Iraq. I do not see any rallies or flags being put out for them. No "lets stop the Drug War, War on Crime, War on Domestic Violence, War on Terrorism" ect. signs around. Support our Police, lay them off mantra. It's the same thing, isn't it?report abuse
