I live in Pownal and have seen my house go from $250,000 to $225,000 in value, in 6 months. My taxes are $3,150 and places selling for $300,000 are the same as my taxes? I built in 1978 and these other people were 1985. I have no garage and they have a three car one. They have one more bedroom than I and 1/4 more bathroom. Oh, they have tarred driveways.
I'm having the town go over it since I also discovered that I'm being taxed on 5 acres instead of 3! It's only been 30 years of this........
The town pople don't even know how many years back they have to refund me. I'm discouraged. Suggestions welcomedreport abuse

AH, how sad, that no one in america truely owns property. They merely rent it from the state, and what landlord charges rent once a year? On a more sour note, If one pays no rent, the state eventually takes the property and home. What a travesty of justice this is for the poor Mainers who are on the verge of loosing their homes. Homes should not be taxed if they are under a certain value. Its just not fair to the poor.
We should instead have a higher sales tax. Sales tax is simple, fair and paid at the register, and no one loses their homes. But the best way by far to save every maine household about $2500 per year is to buy all existing hydro dams in Maine and generate our own power for almost free. We could all heat our homes with electric heat like they do in Quebec. The monthly power bill would be extremely inexpensive. Then we could sell the excess power to other states. The big dam at Mactaquac dam in N.B. Canada produces so much power they just send the excess into the ground, imagine that. The good people of Quebec have set up their own power dam with Hydro Quebec and produce their own power at 5 cents per kilowatt.report abuse

Even if your town doesn't offer tax clubs you can go to your local credit union or bank and they'll help you set one up. They'll do the math for you and set up an automatic transfer from you current checking or savings account to a seperate account thats just for your taxes.report abuse
