I think "out for the year" is a stiff penalty for most of these kids. If this had happened (a fight) in a school setting, the combatants would be suspended, not expelled. Suspending the players involved for the remainder of the season would amount to expulsion. That being said, the player who began the whole melee should probably be set down for the season.

As for a suspension for coach McGee for leaving the coaching box, what would you have him do? Sit on his hands and let the battle rage around him? Let the fans and parents break up the fighting?
He tried to break the thing up for crying out loud.report abuse

People are forgetting the applicable MPA rule that was initially reported in the first article. Here it is: "The Maine Principals' Association rules call for a one-game suspension for any player or coach who is thrown out of a game."

I only remember one ejection, and that being a Lewiston player. Then a Lewiston player chucked the basketball into the face of a Lawrence player. This initiated the brawl.

I think we all can agree that those responsible and/or a part of the violence need to be held accountable for their actions. It is unfortunate to penalize those players that had nothing to do with the brawl, which just stayed out of the fray and even tried to keep the crowds back in the bleachers. This "fairness" needs to be applied to both sides.

How easy it is for some to call for the unequivocal suspension of both teams! Hopefully any videotape will identify the perpetrators and the participants on both sides, and then proper and prudent punishment levied. Don’t take a sledgehammer to clean a smudge on a window. There are good kids on both sides that deserve a chance to finish their season, even if it means suspending those players that are “guilty”.

Over the last couple of days, several blog posters have astutely drawn a parallel to professional sports and the negative behavior many of the more outlandish athletes present to the public. America still glorifies such behavior, and even seems to encourage it. How can we blame only our children?report abuse
